Siberian cedars
Are you tempted to get an outdoor barrel sauna, but are not sure which material to have it made of? Let’s take a look at the features of cedar and spruce, which will help you decide which to choose.

You’ll fall in love with cedar wood

Cedar wood contains essential oils and its pleasing odour will fill your outdoor barrel sauna and positively impact your physical and mental well-being. It also includes natural antibiotics. You can learn more about the benefits of cedar wood in our article The health benefits of cedar.

Its antiseptics and essential oils protect the lumber from insects. It is also resistant to the changing of seasons and temperatures – cedar wood does not shrink and swell as much as other types of wood. The cracks in cedar wood are more delicate than in other kinds of lumber, providing a more luxurious look. It is clear without knots, the wood grain is exceptional, and the wood comes in great varieties of colour from dark brown to light butter.

Cedar is resistant to humidity, the vagaries of the weather, and insects. There is one further advantage to this kind of lumber – due to growing far in the north, the wood is thicker than that of Central European lumber. Your outdoor barrel sauna will provide years or enjoyment and it will always look as beautiful as the day you get it.

The typical spruce

Scandinavian spruce wood is the most used material in sauna production – it is more affordable as well. Compared to Central European spruce, Scandinavian spruce grows more slowly and in colder conditions, making the wood denser and more resistant to weather.

Due to the harsh conditions it grows in, Scandinavian spruce is harder, has less knots, and its thin tree rings provide an even more magnificent look.

Scandinavian spruce is also popular for its typical resin scent. The wood is one of the lightest woods you can find – it’s almost white with yellow tones. If you are looking for more affordable option than Siberian cedar, Scandinavian spruce is the right choice.

How will you decide?

Cedar wood is considered luxurious and is more expensive. However, you don’t pay more simply for luxury – the price is higher because of cedar’s quality which will ensure it will serve you for years to come. Spruce wood is available at a more accessible price point, however it lacks cedar’s healing effects. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us through our form.
